Before you cross
Do I need a passport to enter Gibraltar from Spain?+
Yes. Gibraltar operates its own border controls and you will need a passport to cross in either direction, even on a day trip from Spain.
Is one day enough to see Gibraltar?+
For the Upper Rock and Main Street, yes — though with the cable car closed for rebuilding until 2027 you will need a taxi tour or a walk to reach the top. Two days lets you add Europa Point, the Mediterranean Steps and a proper dinner on the marina without rushing.
Should I stay in Gibraltar or over the border in Spain?+
Gibraltar has around six hotels and a much larger pool of short-stay apartments. Staying on the Rock costs more but removes the frontier from your day entirely, which matters more than most visitors expect.
How do you rank hotels and apartments?+
The Stay Score is the Booking.com guest rating, shown unchanged — we don't adjust, weight or blend it. Ours was read on 19 July 2026, and each listing says so. On top of that we read current Tripadvisor and Google reviews for the hotels and buildings and publish our own dated verdicts. Nobody pays to rank, and no placement is for sale.
Can I drive into Gibraltar?+
You can, but queues at the frontier are unpredictable and parking on the Rock is limited. Most day-trippers park in La Línea and walk across in a few minutes.
What currency does Gibraltar use?+
The Gibraltar pound, pegged one-to-one with sterling. UK notes are accepted everywhere; euros are widely accepted at a poor rate.
