A lighthouse Trinity House still keeps, a mosque a king paid for, a Victorian gun you can stand beside, and Africa across the water. One bus, no ticket.
FreeThe Old Town on foot
Main Street & Town Centre1 to 3 hours
From the barrack square where the last man was hanged to the gate that was the only way in for three centuries. A mile on foot, no ticket, and the town itself is the exhibit.
FreeThe Alameda Gardens
South of Main Street45 minutes to 1.5 hours
Free, open from eight until sunset, laid out in 1816 and the coolest place in town on a hot afternoon. A wildlife park inside is the only ticket.

A Genoese fishing village and a real sandy beach under the sheer east face of the Rock. A bus ride from town, and no ticket, just the sea.

The Rock's finest walk: a military path of steps and ledges up the wild south and east faces to the batteries at the top. It is inside the reserve, so it costs the gate ticket.

Five beaches on a six-kilometre rock, all free, lifeguarded from late May to October. The east side gets the morning sun, the west the sunset.
