The evidence rule

A property with one five-star review scores a perfect 10. Ranked naively, Gibraltar's top six would be filled with flats almost nobody has stayed in.

So we apply one rule, and it is the only filter we apply:

We do not rank a property until at least 10 people have reviewed it.

This is not a formula and not a judgement about quality — it is a threshold of evidence. The score itself is untouched. Properties below the line are still listed and still findable; they simply do not hold a ranked position until enough guests have reviewed them. Plenty of people may have stayed — what we need is enough of them on the record.

What counts as Gibraltar

Search most booking sites for Gibraltar and roughly one listing in six is in Spain. They sit in La Línea, across the frontier, and many are named to blur the point —Gibraltar Views Guest House, Mar y Gibraltar,La Terraza de La Línea. Book one and you are crossing a border every time you want dinner.

We filter every property by coordinate against the Gibraltar peninsula. If it is north of the frontier, it does not appear here, whatever it calls itself.

In our final Booking pass, on 2026-07-19, this excluded 119 of 434 properties. It is a dull piece of work that nobody else does, and it is most of the reason this site is more useful than a search box.

Where verdicts come from

We have not stayed anywhere. No verdict on this site rests on someone from here having slept in the room, and we are not going to imply otherwise.

What a verdict rests on is research: the guest reviews across the booking platforms, the operator's own site for rooms, facilities and rates, published reviews by people who did stay, and the historical record where a place has one. Every researched page lists what we read at the bottom, so you can check the working rather than take the conclusion.

Verdicts are dated and stamped with the score the property held when they were written. When a fresh reading moves materially against a verdict — for stays that now means the Tripadvisor and Google readings we take monthly — the page says the verdict is out of date rather than letting it quietly stop being true.

Why we show no review text

We show a review count and a score, never other sites' review text. Partly that is licensing — Google forbids storing review content, and Tripadvisor's terms would oblige us to display their rating system alongside ours.

Mostly, though, it would not help you. Tripadvisor already has the reviews and has far more of them than we ever will. Reproducing a handful here would make this a worse version of a site that already exists. What is missing in Gibraltar is not review volume — it is somebody willing to say which places are actually worth it.

So we read the reviews, write a verdict in our own words, and link you to the originals. We would rather send you to the source than quote it back at you.

Prices

Prices shown are indicative nightly rates, checked on the date printed beside them. They are not live availability. Rates move constantly and depend on your dates, so treat ours as a guide to what a place costs and confirm the real number on the booking site.

We would rather show an honest stale price with a date on it than an urgent-looking one that is wrong.

How we make money

If you book through a link here, we may earn a commission from the booking site. It costs you nothing and does not change the price you pay.

What it does not do is change the order. Commission rates are not an input to the Stay Score — the score is Booking's guest rating, which we could not adjust in our own favour even if we wanted to. That is one of the quieter advantages of using a number we do not control.

• Where we have negotiated a direct rate with an operator, the listing saysBook direct and tells you we earn a margin from them rather than from you.

When we get it wrong

We will. While building this site we claimed the cross-border listing problem did not exist, on the strength of a ten-property sample. A hundred-property sample showed one in six was in Spain. The claim was wrong and the correction is recorded rather than quietly deleted.

That is the standard we intend to hold. If something here is wrong — a closed hotel, a bad walk time, a score that does not match the source — tell us and we will fix it and say that we did.
