The decision, first
Since 15 July 2026 you can drive straight into Gibraltar — the frontier barrier is gone and there are no routine checks for cars. The question is no longer the border; it is what happens on the other side of it. Town is narrow, one-way and short of spaces, and the car parks that reliably have room sit on the reclamation, a walk or a bus from the old town. So the choice is honest either way: park inside and be done with driving, or park in La Línea and walk across the runway — Casemates Square is about fifteen minutes on foot from the Spanish side.
Heads up
You cannot drive up the Rock
Non-resident vehicles are not allowed into the Upper Rock Nature Reserve at all — Blue Badge holders are the only exception. Whatever you do with the car, the top is reached by taxi tour, shuttle, e-bike or your own legs.

Free parking in Gibraltar is not a myth, but it is one car park: the white-lined centre bays at Grand Parade, first come, first served, and popular for exactly that reason. Everything else worth using is paid.

This is what most day-trippers should do, and it is what our Costa del Sol day-trip guide recommends in full: leave the car at Santa Bárbara, walk across the runway, and give the day to the Rock instead of to a parking search. It also dissolves the hire-car problem — most Spanish rental firms restrict or surcharge taking their car into Gibraltar, and one of the big ones forbids it outright; the border guide carries the company-by-company table.
The rules once you are in
- Drive on the right, as in Spain — Gibraltar switched in 1929 and every visitor forgets it once.
- 50 km/h limit except where signed lower, and lower is common; the streets set the real speed.
- No entry fee or toll of any kind to bring a car in.
- Seat belts compulsory front and rear; pedestrians have right of way at crossings.
- Caravans and large motorhomes are a genuine mistake here — the tourist board itself points them to the two sites on the Spanish side.
Is there free parking in Gibraltar?+
Yes — the white-lined centre bays at Grand Parade, near the old cable car station. That is the list. White lines are free, yellow lines are resident permits, blue lines are pay-and-display.
Can I drive my own car into Gibraltar?+
Yes, without stopping — the frontier barrier came down on 15 July 2026 and there are no routine vehicle checks. The reasons to hesitate are the streets and the spaces, not the border.
Can I drive up to the top of the Rock?+
No. Non-resident vehicles are banned from the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, with a Blue Badge exception. Go up by taxi tour, the shuttle, e-bike or on foot.
Is it better to park in La Línea?+
For a day trip, usually yes: Santa Bárbara is 650 spaces two minutes from the frontier from about €17.60 a day, and the walk to Casemates is about fifteen minutes. Staying overnight in Gibraltar, ask your hotel first — several have arrangements.
Can I take a hire car in?+
Check the rental terms before you try: most Spanish firms restrict or charge for Gibraltar, and one major one forbids it. Parking in La Línea makes the question go away.
