A Genoese fishing village and a real sandy beach under the sheer east face of the Rock. A bus ride from town, and no ticket, just the sea.

The beach
Smaller and calmer than Eastern Beach next door.
A genuine sand beach under the east face, still called La Caleta by the people who live above it, with the Caleta Hotel on the point to the south. The Rock rises straight behind, so the sun goes mid-afternoon; morning is the time. Lifeguards from late May to October.

The village and the church
Genoese fishermen, and their descendants.
The village was settled by Genoese fishermen in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, part of a larger Genoese presence along the east side, and their descendants, the Caleteños, still live here. The church of Our Lady of Sorrows stands at the sea wall, and the painted houses behind it are the reason the village is on every postcard.

The east face above
The side of the Rock most visitors never see.
The cliff rises straight off the rooftops. The great sloping concrete sheets above the village were the water catchments that fed Gibraltar's reservoirs until 2001; they have been removed and the sand slope is going back to scrub. From the beach you look up at the wildest side of the Rock; from the top of the Mediterranean Steps you look down at this beach.

Before you go
The bus turns round at Both Worlds.
Route 8 continues south past Sandy Bay to the Both Worlds turnaround and comes back the same way; catch it on either side of the road depending on where you are heading. Last buses are around nine.
The Levanter cloud sits on this side of the Rock when the east wind blows. If the top is in cloud from town, Catalan Bay is under it. The beaches →
