The Cable Car
Shut since November 2025 for a two-year rebuild. You cannot ride it.
Currently closed. Closed since 18 November 2025 for a complete rebuild — the biggest overhaul since it opened in 1966 — and not expected to reopen until 2027. Walk up, take a taxi tour or hire an eBike instead. The Nature Reserve and every attraction in it remain open.
The cable car ran from Grand Parade to the top station at 412 metres in about six minutes, and was how most visitors got onto the Upper Rock. It closed on 18 November 2025 and is not expected back until 2027.
This is a full rebuild rather than maintenance — the most significant work since it opened in 1966, run by MH Bland, the firm that built the original. Capacity is meant to rise from roughly 260 passengers an hour to about 1,150, with better access for anyone with mobility needs.
Until then the Rock is walked, driven or cycled. Plenty of sites still sell cable car tickets as though nothing has changed; there is nothing to ride.
Our tip
Queues build sharply when a cruise ship is in. If one is berthed, go first thing or leave it until mid-afternoon.
