The Sunborn is a hotel on a boat, and everything good and awkward about it follows from that single fact.
It arrived in Ocean Village in 2014 and has not moved since. 189 cabins across several decks, a pool and sundeck on top, a spa, a gym and a casino below. The larger grades have floor-to-ceiling windows, marble bathrooms and balconies over the marina, and reviewers reliably describe the whole thing as more glamorous than they expected.
It scores 8.6 from 559 reviews, which reads as mid-table against a Gibraltar median of 8.9. That is a quirk of this market rather than a criticism: Gibraltar's listings are overwhelmingly serviced apartments, and apartments rate higher than hotels on Booking almost everywhere. Against the other hotels on the Rock, 8.6 is at the top.
The honest caveat is scale. A cabin is a cabin — well finished, but narrower than a room of the same grade ashore, and the rooftop pool is a plunge rather than a length. Book an outer cabin with a balcony or the point is lost.
Come for the novelty, which genuinely delivers, and for a marina address you can walk everywhere from.

A modern waterfront development of towers, pontoons and restaurant terraces built around a working marina, with the Sunborn superyacht hotel moored at the end of it. It holds the densest concentration of short lets in Gibraltar and is a flat ten-minute walk from Main Street. Lively rather than quiet — the bars below the apartments run late on summer weekends.
