The Rock is the most famous address in Gibraltar and, on the numbers, one of its weaker performers. Both things are true at once, and the gap between them is the whole story.
Built in 1932 by the 4th Marquess of Bute and run by the Bland Group since 1959, it is a white Art Deco block on Europa Road looking out over the bay towards Africa. Sarah Churchill married here in 1962. Sean Connery stayed after his wedding the same year. The terrace was once called the finest dining room on the Rock, and the head chef has been in the kitchen since 1973.
That history is not marketing — it is genuinely the reason to come. The view from the terrace is the best from any hotel in Gibraltar and no refurbishment could give a competitor one like it.
But the last significant refurbishment was 2014, and it shows in the rooms and especially the bathrooms. The pool, spectacular in photographs, sits above a road you can hear. Guests who arrive expecting the five-star hotel the building implies are the ones writing the disappointed reviews, and there are enough of them to put an 8.4 against a Gibraltar median of 8.9.
Come for the terrace and the history. The five-minute walk to the cable car will be a real advantage again when it reopens in 2027; until then it buys you nothing, and there is a taxi rank at the door instead. Do not come expecting the rooms to match the lobby.

The residential slope running south from the town towards Europa Point, taking in Europa Road, the Alameda Botanic Gardens and the Rock Hotel. Leafier and considerably quieter than anywhere central, with the trade-off written into the contour lines: everything is downhill on the way out and uphill on the way back.
