Alfred's Restaurant

Alfred's is the restaurant of the Rock Hotel on Europa Road, and the reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026. It scores 4.2 on Tripadvisor from 396 reviews and 4.6 on Google from 50, for an Index of 4.20. The newest Tripadvisor review is from August 2026, but the newest Google review dates from February 2026, and several of the Tripadvisor entries are really reviews of the hotel's rooms and towels rather than the restaurant, so they carry little weight here.

The view over the bay at sunset is in nearly every review, and the room lives up to it: crisp white linen, art deco and colonial decor, service more formal than Gibraltar usually manages. A couple dining as non-residents in July 2026 called it the only fine dining in Gibraltar, with handmade ravioli, a langoustine and lobster bisque, beef medallions and crème brûlée all delicious; an August visitor found the food excellent and was given a free prawn appetiser, though the room was so quiet it lacked atmosphere.

The menu that reviewers describe runs from a set-price Sunday lunch, with grilled goat's cheese and a huge roast beef, to lamb shank, ribeye with truffle mash, sea bass, fish and chips, an apple pie and a strawberry ice cream one American called the best of his life. Afternoon tea is a fixture, popular with visitors as well as guests, and a signature Gin on the Rock cocktail and free hand-made crisps at the bar are mentioned. Staff are named warmly: Abdellah, Karim and Ouissal, and a Google reviewer recalls excellent earlier service from Abdullah.

The misses are about the floor as much as the kitchen. An April 2026 dinner took two hours for a main and a dessert, with three servers including an intern muddling tables; a February 2025 afternoon tea came on an unwiped table with one menu, a dry scone, a sponge that looked bought in, and a waiter who looked straight at a raised hand and went back inside. A duck was sent back twice and still arrived dry, and one guest preferred the place when it was the Wisteria Terrace. The earlier complaints about non-residents being made to feel unwelcome do not appear in this set.

Come for a special lunch or dinner on the terrace at sunset, or for afternoon tea, and book; expect hotel prices and accept that the service can be either exemplary or absent depending on the night. Nobody from Gibraltar Index has eaten here; this write-up is drawn from the reviews.
