Our review

The Angry Friar is a British pub with a big terrace on Main Street, scoring 2.8 on Tripadvisor from 871 reviews and 3.7 on Google from 2,287, for an Index of 3.50. We re-read the reviews on 6 September 2026, with the newest from the day before. Nothing in the summer's reviews moves the picture; if anything the hygiene complaints have got worse.

The cleanliness accounts dominate 2026 and come from several countries. Reviewers between April and September describe greasy tables, glasses that looked used or barely rinsed, a cloth for wiping tables hung outside on the building and reused without hand-washing, toilets in a miserable state, and hair in the fish and chips on two separate August visits. One reviewer in May found flies, a portable sink outside and dirty sauce jars, and refused to use the toilet at all.

The kitchen complaints are the familiar ones: cold peas and chips, batter not cooked through, a steak and kidney pie the reviewer was assured was homemade and found microwaved and raw underneath, a hot dog that arrived as a sausage in a roll and nothing else, four fried wings for £10.50, and a large fish and chips that differs from the small only in the quantity of chips. Two separate reviewers this summer say they or their children were sick afterwards; those are their claims, not something we can check.

The counter-evidence is real but thin. A German reviewer in September enjoyed the pub atmosphere, several draught beers and attentive service; a Spanish couple in August found the food basic but correct, the staff kind and the terrace pleasant; a French party thought the fish and chips fine, the prices good and the toilets nowhere near as bad as claimed on their day; a July birthday party called the food fabulous. Service is also where the ugliest stories sit, including a barman said to have sworn at customers over bottled Guinness and a bill dispute in which drinkers were asked to prove they had paid.

Come for a beer on the Main Street terrace if you must, and note that even the beer draws complaints: no dry cider, and a Guinness one reviewer called the worst he has drunk. Eat somewhere else; the good accounts are outweighed many times over by the hygiene and illness claims, and the 2.8 is honest. Worst dining experience ever!

DO NOT GO IT IS HORRIBLE now I am vomiting everywhere 🤮🤮🤮
the food was terrible there were hairs everywhere, they treated us horribly, the place smelled horrible and the table was dirty also the glasses they did not know how to wash well, they did not discount the food which we barely even ate because it was full of blonde hairs 🤢🤮more →

The food makes „angry“
We were there with the family because the children were very hungry. We had to wait an age for our food. Then one dish arrived, followed by more waiting, and finally the hot dogs we’d ordered for the children came. The quality was appalling, but the children ate them anyway because they were so hungry. Leider eine absolute Katastrophe. Für uns war The Angry Friar eine klassische Touristenfalle und mit Abstand eines der ungepflegtesten Lokale, die wir seit Langem besucht haben.
