Our review

Bistro 292 is a café-bistro at 292 Main Street, beside the courthouse on a prime tourist stretch. It scores 2.2 on Tripadvisor from 206 reviews and 2.1 on Google from 320, and the Index, weighing both, puts it at 2.2, among the lowest in Gibraltar. The reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026; the newest is from late August, and the summer of 2026 has changed nothing.

The sign claiming probably the best fish and chips in Gibraltar is the lightning rod. Reviewers on both platforms describe fish cold and hard in the middle, cooked from frozen or microwaved, skin left on, a thick oily batter, thin oven chips, watery mushy peas, and in August 2026 a steak pie in a foil tray with the scorching of a microwave. Wraps, nuggets, a Caesar salad and a chicken breast get the same treatment, and waits of 30 to 40 minutes are reported.

The bills are the second grievance and they are quoted precisely: £42 to £50 for two fish and chips with a drink or two, £44 for two steak pies and water, £60 for two wraps and a hot dog, £76 for three, and around £100 for a family lunch. Reviewers add that not all prices appear on the menu, that a £2 per-person table charge and a service charge were added without being flagged, and that the fizzy drink is Pepsi, not Coke.

A minority does fine. A toasted tuna sandwich with fries in November 2025 made a good quick pit stop, a March 2026 reviewer loved the cottage pie from the specials board, and several people praise the staff, the cleanliness and the outdoor tables under the courthouse wisteria. One reviewer suspects the critics are tourists who planned their day badly; the numbers say otherwise.

Too expensive - and a sad experience
Too expensive - not worth the price - especially in terms of both quantity and quality. The skin was not taken from the fish, and the bottom of the panering was soft of oil. Sauce tatar was boring - probably right from the ready-made - in plastic bottle The chips a little under prepared 50 pounds for 2 x fish and chips, a glass of wining more →

WORST FISH AND CHIPS IN GIBRALTER
BISTRO 292 PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS.This place has the worst food I have ever NOT eaten. My wife asked for Fish and chips(advertised as the best fish and chips in Gibraltar) and were we dissapointed.My wife started eating the fish and noticed it was a bit sloppy but thought it was just a bit undercooked, until two mouthfuls later when shmore →

Basic but nice for a quick pitstop
A basic cafe, sort of British style old school cafe food. Not fine dining but I enjoyed a yummy toasted tuna sandwich with fries for a quick pitstop in a busy tourist location. The service was friendly and food was served quickly too!more →

Grotesque food. Highly unreasonably priced crap. “Steak Pie” and “Chip” with water x2, £44!!! The steak pie was a cook from frozen, below budget range, like a 4 pack from an unbranded company, in a foil tray….
