Our review

El Cortijo is a small locals' bar with tapas on Town Range, down a passage off Main Street towards Irish Town. It scores 4.8 on Tripadvisor from 4 reviews and 4.8 on Google from 16, and the Index puts it at 4.60. The reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026 and the newest was posted that same day.

Everyone writes about the atmosphere first. A bull's head and old bullfighting photographs on the wall, a 1970s feel, a small room that has atmosphere even when empty, and a crowd of locals from all over the world who tell stories of the Rock and recommend where to go next. Barry, a Soho barman by trade, is named as landlord in reviews from 2021 and 2023; earlier ones thank Francis and Verena, and Spanish and German reviews from 2025 and 2026 praise the landlady's warmth.

It is cheap. Alhambra on tap, a beer at €2 in May 2025 with free tapas alongside, and a 2014 lunch of tomato salad, pinchitos, cheese, curried meatballs, montaditos, bread and olives for £20, at a time when the lunchtime tables were reserved by locals. One reviewer claims Camarón de la Isla and Santana once drank here.

The caveats are small. It is a bar with tapas rather than a restaurant, the tapas detail is a decade old, and one 2026 reviewer found the toilets a bit ropey.

Come for a cheap pint or a caña and a chat with the regulars away from the Main Street crowds, and eat whatever tapas is going. Nobody from Gibraltar Index has eaten here; this write-up is from the reviews.

a fantastic bar not a restaurant
I've been drinking here dozens of times and it is easily my favourite bar in Gibraltar. There's a bull's head on the wall and old bull fighting photos on the wall. This place has atmosphere even when it is empty. Its small, intimate and with a 1970s feel to the decor. Best of all when people say it is a locals bar, the locals are from allmore →

Hidden Gem of a no fuss Tapas Bar
If you are after a classic Tapas Bar serving good quality authentic food with a buzzing lunchtime atmosphere, this is it. Just off Main Street (Look for Blands Travel) down a little passage towards Irish town. We went at lunchtime and most of the tables inside were reserved by locals but managed to get the last one free. Tomato Salad, Pinmore →
