The Skull

The Skull is a small skull-themed bar on Cannon Lane, one street uphill from Main Street: 4.0 on Tripadvisor from 109 reviews, 4.3 on Google from 354, and an Index of 4.20. The reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026 and the newest is from that day. It is filed under restaurants but it is a pub, and it has not served food since Covid; reviewers on both sites say so, and a German reviewer notes it is now self-service at the bar.

Cheap is the word. Drinks are described as very cheap, extremely cheap and a surprise because there is no price list, and a 2023 reviewer paid £4 for a Kilkenny. Glasses come out of the freezer, there are many beers, cold draught cider, a full range of Dead Man's Fingers rum, Guinness, a pool table, football on the television and seating outside opposite the M&S loading bay. The older reviews mentioning burgers and breakfast rolls describe a kitchen that is gone.

The staff are mostly the draw. Yaz, Poppy and Lee are named, the manager and barmaids are described as welcoming and happy to suggest where to go, and a September 2026 reviewer dealing with a family bereavement found the staff and regulars 'a haven'. The room is full of locals who know each other, which most take as the good sign it usually is.

But not always. An August 2026 pub-crawler met a member of staff they call extremely rude, a March 2026 visitor was ignored by staff and locals alike and left, and a July 2026 German reviewer says it has gone downhill since 2020. Language at the bar is coarse enough to have spoiled one visit, and another reviewer was put off by a customer outside describing her sex life. A locals' pub, and it sounds like one.
