Our review

Gallo Nero is a small Italian on Irish Town, just behind Main Street, recently refurbished and with an open-plan kitchen you can see into at the back. It holds 4.4 on Tripadvisor from 376 reviews and 4.5 on Google from 318, an Index of 4.40. The reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026; the newest Google reviews are from this week, though Tripadvisor has had only four this year.

The refurbishment, done a few months ago, is the story of the summer. Several Google reviewers say it has transformed the place, bringing a fresh look and chilled music without touching what mattered: the cooking is 'fantastic as always', the staff warm, and the old stone interior, which one Spanish-speaking reviewer dates to more than 300 years, still on show. Lasagne is the standing recommendation, named again this month, with pollo aragosta with fried potatoes and vegetables, carbonara, pizza, scampi sambuca, a pork fillet in Pedro Ximénez, an octopus salad and the local rosada all named across the record. Breakfast is served too; scrambled eggs with salmon got a strong write-up.

Value and welcome are the constants. Reviewers describe it as well populated by locals, reasonably priced for the centre and run by very nice owners; one couple's dinner with starters, mains, desserts, beers and wine came to £60 in 2024. Booking is advised, especially on Friday and Saturday, and there is parking nearby.

Dissent is thin and old. A 2024 diner got a lasagne that had cooked onto its plate while the waitress ate pizza and chatted on her phone, and that is the only three-star in the batch. A caution on the other side: eleven five-star Google reviews landed in the first five days of September 2026 alone, a burst that flatters the recent picture even where every one is sincere.

Come for honest, homemade Italian, the lasagne above all, in a freshly done-up room at fair prices, and book. Tucked away and for this reason excellent.

Terrific Ambience
We were introduced to this restaurant by friends who live in Gibraltar and now visit with them on each of our many trips to the Rock! There are a wide selection of Italian dishes on the menu with additional specials on a board on the wall! The restaurant is well populated by the local population and so I would advise reserving a table shomore →
