Our review

Gauchos is an Argentine steakhouse on Fish Market Road by Casemates Square, cooking over coals inside an old military building with a cave-like interior and a terrace on the road. It holds 4.3 on Tripadvisor from 1,289 reviews and 4.3 on Google from 476, an Index of 4.30. The reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026, with the newest from August.

At its best it is the steak people remember from a holiday. Fillet, ribeye, sirloin, chateaubriand and blue fillet are each called the best a reviewer has had, on both sources, and the kitchen has range beyond beef: a lamb shank, a Sunday roast lamb, a huge pork belly with crackling, a sea bass one wife called the best she had ever eaten, empanadas and a layered chocolate brownie. The wine list is called exceptional, and one celebrating couple were welcomed with a glass of bubbly. Note that it is not open on Sunday evenings, and that you enter by a side door.

Staff are named more than at most places in town: Tyler for the welcome, Calin (also Kalin and Cailin) for talking guests through the charcoal, Milan and Claudia, a very tall tattooed waiter, and a live band that will sing happy birthday. Balloons on the chair and a candle in a sorbet appear unasked.

The complaints are about the same things each time and they are worth weighing. An August 2026 diner, posting on both sources, found the empanada still cold in the middle and the steak dry though cooked to order, and called the meal average for the price. A July 2026 diner, also on both, was served food barely warm and a steak undercooked, then handed a hot stone to finish it himself, and met an abrupt head waitress when he complained. Another August visitor found the service indifferent, with 'it is all the same' offered as a recommendation. A January bill of £163 for two came with raw chips and a cold draught from an open door, and the terrace picks up traffic noise and exhaust.

Come for a coal-cooked steak, a serious wine list and a room that knows how to run a birthday; book, sit inside, and expect to pay. Go in knowing that on an off night the kitchen sends out cold or dry plates and the service does not always recover it. Great steak
Really great steakhouse with something for the veggies too. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We sat inside as it was cooler in the cave like interior and enjoyed watching the steak chef working the grill.more →

Fantastic meal!
Another fantastic meal! Went off piste and instead of my usual Argentinian fillet I tried the lamb shank and it was delicious! The staff are fantastic special mention to Milan, Tyler, Claudia and Kalin, who make every visit a treat!more →

Pretty average meal for the price.
Fancied steak so this seemed a good option. Starter was empanada which was still slightly cold and not reheated enough- not worth returning as was edible but not great. Steak cooked over coals so should be tasty but it just seemed dry. Was cooked to the doneness but still not a great eat. Sides were fine. Pretty average meal in the end whmore →

Genuinely one of the most disappointing meals I’ve had in a long time. The food arrived barely warm, which for a steakhouse charging premium prices is unforgivable. My steak came out undercooked — not rare, just badly cooked — and rather than fix it in the kitchen, I was handed a hot stone and told to finish cooking it myself at the tablemore →

The food was great and when I say great I mean amazing! We sat inside which gave really cool since the house is old. We had the chateaubriand and boy the chef got it right. Having said that I cant say that the service was good at all. It might have been an off day for the team but when you go to a fancy restaurant you expect certain standmore →
