Our review

Gianni's is an Italian on Grand Casemates Square, in one of the old military buildings, doing stone-oven pizza, pasta, fish and chips and salads from morning coffee to evening drinks. It holds 4.4 on Tripadvisor from 540 reviews and 4.0 on Google from 296, an Index of 4.30. The reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026, with the newest from August.

On Tripadvisor the picture is warm and one man dominates it. Moses, also written Moisés, Mosis and Mosses, is named in eight of the fifteen most recent reviews for attentive, cheerful service, and a regular business visitor lists Moisés, Isabel, David and Tatiana as the reason it is his standing choice. The pizza is praised for a stone-fired crust with chunky toppings and a good sauce, a BBQ pizza and a burrata margherita are named, and the fried cod, calamari, secreto empanado, John Dory frito, garlic bread with mozzarella and a Tom and Jerry cheesecake all get specific mentions. Value is a recurring word, and one couple recorded £33.65 for two mains and a large water.

Google is a good deal rougher, and the 0.4 gap between the sources is not noise. Between June and August 2026 reviewers there describe waiting 30 minutes just to order a drink, a poorly made carbonara, wrong meals arriving, hidden extras on the bill, a room that was not that clean and slow service. Fish and chips divides people: huge and excellent for a tour group of 60, awful for a Tripadvisor diner in July and, for one Google reviewer, proof that an Italian should not be attempting it at all. One regular says it is not as good as when it traded as Cafe Solo.

So the honest reading is that Gianni's is two restaurants depending on the day and the server. On a good night the cooking is fresh and generous, the square-front setting is a pleasure, and the service is the kind people come back for. On a bad one the kitchen slips, the bill surprises, and nobody is watching the tables.

Come for the pizza and the fried cod, at fair prices for a main-square table, and hope Moses is on; stick to the Italian side of the menu. Great pizzas
Great location in Casemates square. We ate there twice during our stay as it was so good. Son said it was the best pizza he’s ever had and I have to say it wasn’t far off. They clearly have a stone fired pizza oven so the crusts are lovely with really chunky toppings and their pizza sauce is delicious.. The pasta is really good too and thmore →

It was a slow service at acknowledging our present when we first sat down. The waitress was blunt and didn't look like she wanted to be there when taking our orders.I ordered fish and chips but the fish tasted awful and the presentation was not to the standard I expected. I stopped by the restaurant with my partner looking for something to eat and we decided to choose this one because of the tranquility we saw on the terrace. As soon as we arrived, a guy named Moises greeted us, a 10/10 service, super attentive to everything. He recommended some dishes; we chose fried cod. I'm not much of a fish eater, butmore →

Excellent waiter and a very good restaurant.
We have had an excellent experience. We tried a pizza, the cod, and the garlic bread, and everything was delicious. I genuinely do not think I have ever been to somewhere where the service is so slow. I'm writing this while waiting to get my drink. I really had been waiting for 30mins before going up to the staff to order. I had already had 2 drinks prior to this and they were also slow but not as slow as this.
