Our review

The Lord Nelson is a British pub in the back left corner of Casemates Square, and the reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026. It scores 4.1 on Tripadvisor from 571 reviews and 4.3 on Google from 1,725, for an Index of 4.30, and the newest reviews are from 6 September 2026 itself.

One man dominates the reviews: Bear, the bar manager, named in half a dozen of them for his welcome, his history chat, a free packet of crisps for the children and a table held for a father with mobility problems. Lauren, Matthew and a Polish server, Szymon, are thanked too, and visitors from Poland, Germany, Spain, France, Hungary and Italy all rate it warmly, the Germans and Spanish for the wide beer choice. Football on the screens, the naval pictures on the walls, clean toilets and a relaxed, friendly room round it out.

Fish and chips is the plate, called the best in Gibraltar by more than one reviewer, with a house curry sauce, a superb scampi at £15.95 with a hot sauce like wing sauce, cheesy chips, a pizza and a burger all praised. Drinks are priced in plain sight in one September review: Doom Bar at £6, three Carlsbergs at £14.95, a Kilkenny at £6.50, and the Guinness is well kept. Note that you order at the bar, that the food list is short, and that an Italian found the coffee terrible.

The one sour note is sharp. A visitor arriving just before six in late August, with people still eating inside, was told the kitchen was closed and found the response abrupt and rude. It is a single account against a very warm run, but worth knowing before you build an evening around dinner.

Great place and food
We went yesterday - had a great time - had the scampi at 15.95, a bottle of Sharps Doomsbar for 6, 3 Carlsbergs for 14.95, and 1 Kilkenney for 6.50. The outside was full and only a few inside - the servers were great and the location perfect. The scampi was excellent, as were the fries and their "hot sauce," which tasted like wing sauce. more →

Don’t lie about your opening hours!
Arrived for dinner a bit before 6pm, with people eating inside. Ordered a beer and asked to see a menu, to be told the kitchen was closed! What the actual feck? There were plenty of options elsewhere, but don’t say you’re open when you’ve arbitrarily closed the kitchen. Never seen the like. And I know the language can be a bit of a barriemore →

Great staff and a relaxed atmosphere We stopped at the Lord Nelson for a few drinks after visiting the Rock and had a lovely time. The staff were great: friendly, approachable and very welcoming. Popped in for a pint yesterday (05/09/2026). Matthew was a fantastic server. I ordered a pint (or a few!) of Guinness followed by some cheesy chips. Everything was perfect and clean toilets too. Everyone was so polite, chatty and friendly. Will definitely return again. Top work guys.more →
