Our review

Monique's is a café-bistro on the waterfront at Queensway Quay, doing breakfast and lunch through the day and a fuller dinner menu in the evening. It holds 4.5 on Tripadvisor from 317 reviews and 4.4 on Google from 555, an Index of 4.40. The reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026, and the newest is from this month.

The setting still does a lot of the work: a marina terrace away from the cruise-ship crowds, with inside seating for the heat. When it lands, the food is warmly described. Monique's chicken, an apple pie with custard, ice cream and cream, a gazpacho that surprised a reviewer, spring rolls served in a wire basket, a cheesecake and a cocktail called the painkiller are all named with pleasure, and breakfast remains the value draw, with pancakes and waffles at around six pounds. A Valentine's lunch of duck bon bon and beef Wellington was called a proper occasion.

But the late-summer Google reviews have turned noticeably rougher on the kitchen. Within three weeks in August and September 2026 reviewers reported fish and chips that tasted frozen and dry, a chicken dish that was inedible, a Niçoise salad that was mostly potato, a whole table finding the food 'lacking flavour', and a meal summed up as 'mid and slow'. Earlier in the year a chowder was tasteless, a bread and butter pudding stodgy, a chicken ciabatta tough and a Sunday roast short of gravy. The picture has changed since the spring: praise for the food is now matched by complaints about it.

Service is the older and steadier complaint. Slow pace recurs, including 45 minutes to food with three tables occupied and a reviewer on their third visit calling the waits terrible whether for coffee or steak. Two 2026 accounts go further: a long-standing family were spoken to rudely over sitting at a five-seat table on a quiet day and walked out, and a birthday afternoon tea was hemmed in by an unannounced time limit and a bill brought 45 minutes early. Against that, several reviewers found the staff friendly and polite, and David is named for a warm welcome.

Come for a good-value breakfast on a quiet marina terrace, or for a dinner built around the plates reviewers have praised, and keep expectations of pace relaxed. Enjoyable
We are so glad we discovered the Queensway quay on our last night in Gibraltar. We enjoyed a very tasty meal here, inside in the cool. The restaurant was nicely decorated and atmospheric. We chose Monique’s chicken for our main course, so tasty. Desserts were good too. My husband loved his apple pie with custard, ice cream and cream. Servmore →

Very slow service despite being quite, food poor
Very slow service despite only being 3 other tables occupied, took 45 minutes from sitting down to getting our food delivered. Neighbouring table complained about delay as had to get back to work, thankfully we were there as tourists so weren't in a massive rush. food was so so - chicken in ciabbata sandwich was over cooked and tough. Disappointing
Very disappointing to write this review. We have been coming to Monique’s for years, it is one of our favourite breakfast spots when we visit our family here in Gibraltar. On this occasion the restaurant was not busy and there was a table in the shade with the marina view so we sat there as a 2 (it was for 5 but the restaurant was quiet).more →

Excellent service and food with very reasonably prices
Had a lovely chicken salad for lunch- And drinks which were really good value. Went back for breakfast the next day- pancakes were excellent and the waffles were to die for. £6 for pancakes with strawberries- such good value. At the marina, view is alright. Staff fine. The fish and chips, however, terrible. Frozen fish, dry, tasteless. Horrible. Nominated for best restaurant in Gibraltar. Give me a break. Shameful.
