The Rock English Fish & Chip Restaurant sits at 1A Casemates Square with open-air tables on the square. It holds 3.2 on Tripadvisor from 283 reviews and 3.3 on Google from 312, for an Index of 3.30. The reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026 and the newest is from 21 August.

August 2026 brought a cluster of reviews in both directions. Four one-line five-stars landed on Google on 16 August, and a detailed one on 4 August described exceptionally fresh, flaky cod in a crisp batter; French visitors praised the friendly waiters and low prices. Against those, Spanish and German reviewers the same month found the fish bland with a huge or soggy batter and the chips refried, and Romanian and English one-liners called it disgusting and overpriced. A June 2026 Tripadvisor reviewer named Jamal and called a large cod amazing.

The most useful new theme is money. A Polish reviewer says the waiter converted a £33 bill to 45 euros and then added 5 euros on top; a family in August says they paid 50 euros for three items and felt pressed over the exchange rate; a Tripadvisor visitor was charged "the earth" for extra sauces and received a 40p refund on complaint; and a February 2025 reviewer found a large discrepancy on the bill. Pay in pounds and read the bill.

Two reviewers, in August 2026 and March 2025, describe being turned away at a table while others were served, one told it was lunch time, the other refused because they did not want alcohol at a weekend. And the older warning stands: two May 2026 diners ordered grilled fish and got fried, with over-salted pork chops and cold chips, and a 2025 reviewer said the kitchen cannot serve the wider menu fresh. A Tripadvisor regular did single out the Sacarello's coffee as the best thing about the place.

Come for a plain plate of cod and chips, order that and nothing else, pay in pounds, and check the bill before you hand over a card or euros. On the reviews the fish is as likely to be very good as very ordinary, and everything around it is less reliable than that. Ok food but service and attitude not the best.
Sat at the wrong place by accident and dare not leave! Food was ok. Don’t ask for extra sauces as they charge the earth! Disappointed with that and response when questioned about the bill although we did recieved a 40p refund!! Better places in the square!more →

Amazing fishing chips friendly stuff great location
As uk resident visited Gibraltar for a holiday fancied fish and chips went to this restaurant ordered a large cod and ships wow the taste was amazing and food was served by a lovely smile a huge shout for Jamal and all the staff were amazing highly recommendedmore →

Wrong order and tasteless food
I do not recommend this place. The food was tasteless and the fries were stale. I ordered grilled swordfish but received fried swordfish instead. The pork chops were extremely salty and also completely lacking flavor.more →

Very disappointed with this restaurant. I ordered grilled fish but received fried fish instead. The pork chops were way too salty, and the fries were cold. I definitely would not visit again and I can’t recommend it to anyone. The service was decent, although I had to wait quite a long time for the bill even though the restaurant wasn’t bmore →
