The Hummingbird Café

The Hummingbird Café is a small café on City Mill Lane, a step off Main Street, scoring 4.7 on Google across 55 reviews. It is not on Tripadvisor, so the Index of 4.60 rests on Google alone. We re-read the reviews on 6 September 2026; the newest with text dates from July 2025, so the picture is more than a year old.

Through 2024 and into spring 2025 the reviews are warm and consistent: a charming, slightly hidden room, a welcoming owner, freshly made wraps and toasties, a coronation chicken wrap, a shepherd's pie, smoothies and a chocolate cheesecake that more than one visitor calls among the best they have eaten. A vegan breakfast of mashed avocado on sourdough with spiced vegetables is on the menu, payment is taken in pounds or euros, and German visitors found the prices cheap for Gibraltar.

The three newest reviews with text, from June and July 2025, tell a different story. A couple were left unacknowledged and served an English breakfast with rock-hard bread and egg, another pair were sent away for fifteen minutes despite the posted opening hour and then ignored while the coffee was called dreadful, and a visitor from Algeciras found a hoover pipe across the door and a room of a couple of tables that bore no resemblance to the photographs. Whether that was a rough patch or a lasting change, nothing has been posted since to settle it.

Two practical points hold across the whole sample: there is no toilet on site, and it is tiny, with one reviewer reckoning no more than three people fit at once.

Come for a friendly, vegan-aware café stop with good smoothies and cheesecake, if it is trading as its earlier reviewers describe; go knowing the most recent word is poor and more than a year old, so it is worth a look through the door before you commit.
