The Ocean Restaurant

The Ocean Restaurant is a seafood and Mediterranean restaurant set between Casemates and Ocean Village, reopened in spring 2026 after a refurbishment, and the reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026. It scores 4.1 on Tripadvisor from 251 reviews; its Google listing shows 2.5 but from only 8 reviews, too few to weigh much, and the Index is 4.10. The newest reviews are from late August 2026.

The house dish is gambas pil pil, ordered and praised more than anything else, and the wider list that reviewers enjoy runs to fried calamari, a grilled fish platter, John Dory gratin, lemon sole, rosada frita, a mixed rice, seafood soup, a Russian salad, a peppered steak to share, a New Zealand fillet, tocino de cielo and a homemade cheesecake. Starters come in main-course size, staff will box up what you cannot finish, and portions are called generous and well priced. Tarik is named three times for professional, friendly service, with Jamie recommending a whole meal that landed; the refurbished room is air-conditioned and, for one regular, better than before.

The dissent is about the seafood itself, and it has grown through the summer. A May 2026 family of four who knew the old place found pre-cooked prawns in tasteless oil, slabs of swordfish and battered fish they disliked, with bread charged extra; an August two-star found calamari rubbery and freezer-tasting, prawns and scallops overcooked, the paella the only highlight, at prices the food did not justify; a German Google reviewer describes doughy breaded anchovies, bitter tuna and sauce with a little spaghetti. Another Google visitor was put off by unclean plates and glasses.

Service slips on busy nights: a June couple waited over an hour and a half with no bread or olives to bridge it and found both women's toilets blocked without a sign, and staff sometimes forget items. The outside tables sit by a roundabout and traffic lights, which one reviewer found too loud to think.

Come for gambas pil pil, the fried fish and the steak, in generous portions with warm service, and book; be aware that since the refurbishment several diners have found the seafood tired or overcooked at a price that stings, and that the tiny Google sample is largely unhappy.
