Our review

Flavours of India 1947 is a small, recently refurbished Indian restaurant and takeaway on Queensway Road, in the Ocean Heights gallery. It holds 5.0 on Tripadvisor from 19 reviews and 4.7 on Google from 135, which gives an Index of 4.70. The reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026; the newest Tripadvisor review is from June 2026 and the newest Google review from August.

The cooking is what the fives are about, and the dishes named are consistent: the dhal, called the best in Gibraltar; the lamb and chicken tikka biryanis; sweet potato with spinach and chickpeas; a Goan vegetarian curry; cheese and spinach samosas; and a homemade banoffee pie. Reviewers praise fresh, juicy chicken, spice heat adjusted on request, and a few Indian-Oriental fusion dishes not seen elsewhere. Portions are large and prices are called reasonable, and Prakash and Chinna are named for friendly service.

The Google side has turned more critical through 2026, and the complaints are about the running of the place rather than the food. Three one-star reviews between March and June describe staff who were rude, a Friday evening when the published opening hours were wrong and a family was turned away without apology, and a meal spoiled by fierce air conditioning and an outside toilet reached through doors off their hinges. A December 2025 five-star also notes rushed service when busy, a room that gets very loud with two big tables in it, and toilets by key outside that need attention.

It is very small, with seating for around a dozen, and takeaway is a big part of the business: regulars order through Rock Heroes, and older reviews describe a wait for food that was worth it. Booking is advised for Thursday to Saturday, and one reviewer warns not to be put off by the unappealing location.

Come for some of the best-regarded Indian cooking on the Rock, starting with the dhal, either in the little room or as a takeaway; go in knowing the room is tight and loud when full, the toilets are outside, and a few 2026 reviewers found the welcome cold. Absolutely wonderful!
Wow what a great find! We had chicken tikka masala (I think that’s what it was), rice, naan and mixed veggie raita. It was a lot of food, and absolutely delicious! More than enough for two people. This please has had a huge refurb but kept the same flavours and reasonable prices. The bes Dhal in Gibraltar it's a must try ! However all the dishes are great lamb biryani was also great.more →

Delicious Indian takeaway

Omg, fabulous food but got cold immediately we were served as the air con was ridiculously cold. Also we were happily eating our poppadoms when they were whisked away as apparently our mains were ready which were hot for 2 minutes because of the over zealous aircon.
