Kokonut Bar

Kokonut Bar is the bar on Sandy Bay, on the east side of the Rock, and by one reviewer's account the only place to eat or drink on that beach. It scores 3.1 on Google across 52 reviews and is not on Tripadvisor, so the Index of 3.40 rests on Google alone. The reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026 and the split is stark: almost every review is either five stars or one.

What the good reviews agree on is the spot. The view of the Rock from the east, a pint of Estrella in the shade, the number 8 bus stopping outside and the beach itself get thanked whatever the star rating; a Spanish reviewer calls it the best chiringuito on the best beach in the Campo. When the food is praised it is plain beach-bar cooking: battered ling and calamari on a bed of salad, sausage and bacon baps in the morning, meatballs and chips, a chicken burger that was fine.

The one-star reviews are about the staff and the kitchen, and they run right up to this summer. In May 2026 a visitor who said good morning was shouted at for sitting at a table before the place had opened; in July a Swedish party described bone in the chicken, a burger with raw meat, chips that had not been fried and plates and glasses with sand on them. Older reviews describe being ignored at the bar under a row of reserved signs, a two-hour wait for chips and pork rolls, a mixed salad that was a tin of tuna on lettuce for £6.50, and a server who threw a group's belongings off the picnic tables.

Two practical points. Pinchitos at £3.50 turned out to be one plate of two skewers between two people, so ask what a portion is before you order. It closed for the season in autumn 2025 without updating Google, and an August 2026 reviewer who liked the meatballs and the chef docked a star for the pigeons all over the terrace.

Come for a drink on the sand after a swim, expect simple food at beach prices, and do not expect to be looked after. Nobody from Gibraltar Index has eaten here; this is written from 17 reviews with text, and they make it the best-placed bar on the east side and one of the lowest scored in Gibraltar.
