Our review

La Parrilla Wholesome is an Indian and Oriental fusion cafe and takeaway on Devil's Tower Road, directly opposite the Holiday Inn Express, scoring 4.0 on Tripadvisor from 4 reviews and 4.1 on Google from 17, for an Index of 4.20. We re-read the reviews on 6 September 2026; the newest is from early August, and the Tripadvisor side has had nothing since July 2025.

The praise is for freshly cooked food at fair prices: chicken chow mein, butter masala and rice, beef teriyaki and a prawn dhal that one couple stranded by a delayed flight called the best meal of their week, everything prepared in front of you and served hot. It is mostly takeaway with a few tables, does not serve alcohol, and one regular collects a different combination every day. The chef and the music playlist both get a good word.

The complaints are about consistency and manner. The newest review, from August 2026, says the whole Indian half of the menu was unavailable and staff struggled to discuss dietary options in English; a 2024 regular thought ingredients were being swapped for cheaper ones as prices rose, with an overcooked salmon and an order that had to be sent back; others found the noodles greasy, a Szechuan sauce without heat and a plate that tasted like leftovers. Two describe the staff as ignorant.

The most serious account remains the March 2025 Tripadvisor review: a vegetarian given chicken instead of mock duck, a promised refund that never came, dirty tables and floors, and what the reviewer calls a pattern of poor attitude. Their account, not ours, but on a base this small it matters. One Google entry asking for a visa has nothing to do with the restaurant and we discount it.

Come for a fresh, fairly priced chow mein or curry to take away near Eastern Beach, checking first that the section of the menu you want is actually cooking that day; vegetarians should confirm the order before leaving. Yuck
I ordered food at La Parilla and was mistakenly given chicken instead of mock duck. The staff admitted the error and promised a full refund, but two weeks later, I still haven’t received it despite following up. As a vegetarian, this was particularly upsetting. PARRILLA Wholesome quality food at reasonable prices
I use they takeaway facility and pick up a meal of my choice daily taking the thinking out of what I am going to eat, multiple combinations and flavors keep me going back, reasonably priced with quality ingredients, all prepared in front of you, and served by a polite and efficient staff, My thanks to the crew.more →

Was good at first but not so much anymore! Substituting ingredients for lower quality ones but the prices keep on going up. A hit or miss but mostly a miss 👎 Ordered salmon with rice noodles; salmon was overcooked and noodles was more pasta than noodles. Also had to go back to change my order as they got it wrong the first time👏more →
