Lions Bar - The Den

Lions Bar, The Den, is the clubhouse bar of Lions Gibraltar FC at 43A Queensway Road: a football supporters' bar with a kitchen, decorated with photos, memorabilia and shirts, rather than a restaurant in the usual sense. It is not on Tripadvisor and scores 4.9 on Google from 18 reviews, and the Index puts it at 4.60, the score pulled toward the site average because the sample only just clears fifteen. Every review we read is five stars, and the food gets more specific praise than a club bar might expect. Prawns in cognac come up twice, once as a dish not to be missed; a Lions salad, Iberian pork croquettes with honey, cheek in sauce and grilled rosada are listed by one Spanish party, and aubergine, calamari and a carrot cake by another. It is called home-made, hand-made and, by one visitor, the best tapas in Gibraltar.

Prices draw as much comment as the plates: a little over ten euros a head for a full meal, with platos combinados, and wine, beer and coffee at prices one December visitor said had to be seen to be believed. Staff and the owner are described as kind, attentive and hands-on, there is parking outside, and match nights are said to be lively.

The caveat is the sample and the setting. Eighteen reviews at a supporters' club are a small, self-selecting base with no dissent on record, and some are a single word long, so the near-perfect score should be read as a warm local word rather than a settled verdict.

Come for cheap, home-cooked Spanish-leaning food, prawns in cognac especially, and a friendly football-club welcome with parking at the door; go knowing it is a club bar first. Nobody from Gibraltar Index has eaten here; the write-up is from the reviews.
