Our review

St Michael's Cabin is the cafe beside St Michael's Cave in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, attached to a small shop, and reviewers agree it is the only place to eat up there, or one of two. It holds 3.6 on Tripadvisor from 80 reviews and 3.6 on Google from 240, for an Index of 3.60. The reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026 and the newest is from 31 August.

The reviews are really about being a captive audience, and the summer of 2026 sharpened that. A Spanish family paid about 120 euros for empanadillas, cheese triangles, sausage rolls and drinks, each item around 5 euros; a bottle of water was £2 with no prices displayed; and three separate reviewers say the kitchen takes advantage of having no competition. A £5 toastie on cheap sliced bread with processed ham is the standing example.

The hot food itself has drawn hard words in 2026. Two German reviewers in August found the fish bitter and inedible, battered with the skin on, and the burgers dry; a Spanish couple could not eat their fish and chips or burger in June; an August 2026 visitor felt unwell for hours after a greasy burger; and in April 2026 two friends say tepid fish and chips left them very ill for the rest of their holiday. Those are unverified accounts, but there are several of them. Hairs in food, dirty crockery, a double charge and staff described as mocking visitors or on their phones are also recorded.

The other half of the reviews say the opposite, and they are not all old. An August 2026 reviewer called it a good refresh point with simple, tasty food; a Czech visitor the same month found it clean, cosy and honest; April 2026 brought praise for big portions and excellent service after a long climb; a Russian hiker enjoyed a cold cider and a huge salad. A local beer in a proper pint glass, the view, and the ice cream from the hut opposite are the reliable pleasures.

Come for a drink, an ice cream and the view when you are already up the Rock, and check prices before ordering hot food, or carry a sandwich up as more than one reviewer suggests. Poor quality and overpriced
Disappointing experience after a long day walking around the Nature Reserve. My boyfriend ordered a chicken burger, which was one of the worst chicken burgers he has ever had. The bun was hard and seemed reheated, and the fries had a stale taste. I ordered a beef cheeseburger with cheddar. The cheese had a very strange texture, the salad more →

Good refresh point for continuing of Gibraltar climb
Even it is located pretty high on The Rock, it is full visitors. The food is simple but tasty. Cabin cafe is connected with small shop. So you can eat here and but refreshment for continuing your climb.more →

Expensive- terrible toasties! Avoid.
After climing the mediterranean steps- a well derseved stop for refreshments was needed. Sadly the hot food and service here was awful. A Ham and cheese toastie for £5 on cheap white sliced bread. Rubber cheese and processed ham. Barely even toasted. I had to ask and remind them- to put my toasties on- as they forgot. They also left the nmore →

Avoid at all costs
I would avoid this place at all costs. I was served Fish and chips, looked fantastic, cooked on the outside, but as I got further in it was only tepid. Stopped eating at this point but too late. A few hours later I became very, very poorly and so did my friend who ate there too. Ruined the last few days of our holiday.more →

Clearly check what you’ve ordered or you will get charged twice
5 of us ordered, 4 meals turned up . They forgot mine so eventually got it. Had already paid but had to pay again for my meal separately. Rude staff not very helpful. They only give a til receipt not a breakdown of what you ordered.more →

Ich hätte am Liebsten null Sterne gegeben wenn das möglich wäre. Essen ist total überteuert und schmeckt widerlich. Alles war lieblos angerichtet, der Burger trocken, der Fisch war so ekelhaft, dass wir ihn nicht essen konnten.
