Tapas by Gauchos is a tapas restaurant on Chatham Counterguard, off the shopping streets. It holds 4.6 on Tripadvisor from 56 reviews and 4.6 on Google from 259, exact agreement that sets the Index at 4.60. The reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026 and the newest is from 4 September, so the picture is current.

The gambas pil pil is the dish named most, on both sites, with bread to mop the garlic sauce; pork cheek, chorizo in cider, meatballs, cod, lamb kefta, panko chicken in mango sauce, oxtail and a Portuguese reviewer's fish and chips follow. The menu says its tapas are bigger than usual, and one December 2025 table found ten dishes fed two comfortably. One July 2026 reviewer suggests the menu carry an addiction warning.

Service is named generously: Miguel, Coral and Rafa in July 2026, Pablo the manager with Mikey and Adrian, Moha who recognises returning holidaymakers year on year. A September 2026 regular praises the consistency across food, service and presentation and says the place keeps improving. There is live music some evenings, and staff are described as run off their feet but smiling.

Practicalities first: Friday nights get busy, bookings carry a non-refundable ten-pound deposit per person taken off the bill, ask for a table outside, and it closes at ten rather than eleven, which cost it one star from a late arrival in August 2026. The dissent is a minority but consistent in tone. A May 2026 table found the dishes pleasant but lacking and the waiter pushy about ordering more; an October 2025 group waited forty minutes for an order to be taken; an October 2024 review found small portions, tinned tuna on the Russian salad, undercooked salmon and five pounds for a can of Guinness.

Worth 3.5 star but don’t have the option
We chose this tapas restaurant based on the reviews but it just didn’t deliver as expected. We picked a few different dishes as a table to share which were nice but all lacking something! The waiter was welcoming and friendly but quite pushy at times to buy extra stuff! I would choose a different restaurant along that strip next time I gomore →
