Our review

The Edinburgh Arms is a gastro bar on Naval Hospital Road in the South District, away from the tourist streets. It holds 4.7 on Tripadvisor from 45 reviews and 4.6 on Google from 89, which sets the Index at 4.60. The reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026; the newest Tripadvisor review is from late August and the newest Google one from July.

The thing that makes it different is still the menu. A coeliac visitor in August 2026 describes it as totally gluten free, another in November 2025 says most of it is, and both say you would not know from the plate: a fish and shellfish tagine rated among the best meals of a lifetime, cod bites in the crispest gluten-free batter one reviewer had tried, mussels cooked in gluten-free beer. Beyond that the rice dishes with Secreto Iberico lead, with prawn pil pil, gambas pil pil with artichoke, Portuguese beer prawns, a mushroom and tofu pil pil for vegetarians and a payoyo cheesecake all named.

It reads as a family-run local with an old English pub feel and a Mediterranean kitchen, a harbour view, a wine list one reviewer praises for going beyond the usual suppliers, and a habit of offering chupitos at the end. A German visitor notes the staff speak limited English, which is unusual for Gibraltar. Practicalities recur: the bar is usually full so book the restaurant above it, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays; the seafood paella must be pre-ordered a day ahead; the kitchen runs until ten; and the number 3 bus to South Barracks gets you close.

The bad nights are few but detailed. A table of four in February 2026, writing on both sites, had mains arrive before starters in a near-empty room, no apology, and olives and bread on the bill. Another in October 2025, just after a reopening with new staff, found themselves ignored and advised waiting a couple of months before visiting. One March 2026 diner was charged for the complimentary chupitos after accepting ice, and a 2025 visitor found it closed mid-afternoon despite the listed hours.

Come for Spanish-leaning cooking that reviewers rate among the best in Gibraltar, and if you are coeliac for a menu you can order from without negotiation; book the restaurant upstairs, pre-order the paella, and treat the South District as part of the trip. Just Outstanding
We headed here as I have Coeliac disease and the Edinburgh Arms are totally gluten free, although you would never know from the quality and taste of the dishes they serve. I always love my seafood but wow, just wow, their fish and shellfish tagine has to rate as one of the very best meals that I have ever experienced. Just totally amazingmore →

Lovely local place off the tourist map
It’s not an obvious choice for visitors, as it’s not in the usual tourist areas. But that’s what makes it special. We had an amazing rice dish with Secreto, lovely Prawn Pil Pil and some cod bites that were to die for. Service was amazing and we were made to feel very welcome. Delish. British bar with a spanish twist.
I had a really enjoyable experience here. The food was lovely across the board, but the standout dish for me was definitely the gambas pil pil con alcachofa— full of flavor. Food was delicious (5 stars) and it was brought out promptly. We were a party of 4 on a busy Friday evening - the gastro bar was full. Staff was welcoming, attentive and friendly. Terrible experience. We were a table of four and ordered starters and mains. With only two other tables in the restaurant, there was no excuse for the chaos that followed.
