Our review

The Royal Calpe is a Main Street pub with a front terrace, a conservatory and a large sheltered beer garden behind, and the reviews were re-read on 6 September 2026. It scores 4.0 on Tripadvisor from 495 reviews and 4.1 on Google from 724, for an Index of 4.10. The newest review is from 5 September 2026, and the picture darkened noticeably in August.

Through the first half of 2026 it was well liked for breakfast and lunch: an American breakfast and eggs Benedict that could not be faulted, fast friendly service, fresh juice, good value, a big steak pie "enough for two" in September, generous plates and a rear patio a French reviewer recommends. A February diner recovering from surgery was helped to and from the carvery by staff she calls 100 per cent attentive. The fish and chips was praised in 2025 and criticised in 2026.

August 2026 was a bad month, and the complaints are specific. A patron of 22 years waited over half an hour for a drinks order, an hour and a half for a second round of flat beer, and left after three hours having managed two drinks; a family of seven waited 25 minutes in a quiet garden, were told the waiter had ice buckets to fill, and took their £100 order to the Clipper, an account posted on both platforms and counted once; a group of ten on a three-quarters empty terrace were refused two joined tables, met an eye-roll, and were never asked for a food order. Both long-standing visitors describe a steady decline. Three further Google one-stars the same week call the food terrible and expensive, the fish frozen and the burger strange.

The kitchen has its own problems. An August carvery had no turkey left, sprouts welded to the tray, hard potatoes and a lukewarm plate; a May burger was undercooked and the same reviewer watched gloves reused, a finger poked into fries under the hot lamp and desserts microwaved in the dining room; an April fish was grey paste inside; a January quiche was smothered in cheddar. Milder reviewers call the burger and lasagne forgettable, the chairs uncomfortable, the beer choice weak, and the place like an abandoned chain pub on a quiet Thursday.

Come for a drink or a breakfast in the beer garden if you are nearby and unhurried; do not come for dinner, and not with a group, until the service described in the August reviews has visibly recovered. Nobody from Gibraltar Index has eaten here; this write-up is drawn from the reviews.

Just poor, inexcusably poor.
Avoided the lunch time rush, so a table for four at 3pm. Over thirty minutes before we were approached for a drinks order. She seemed surprised that nobody had approached us earlier - not as surprised as our group. From there it just went downhill. Really Poor Customer Service by Ignorant Staff
Went to Royal Calpe for a family meal and drinks on Sat 15 Aug 26 having. Sat in back garden and it took approximately 25 minutes to br served despite the restaurant being quiet. One drinks delivered ask male waiter if I could order food, he replied I just need to fill ice buckets and be right back. Waiter failed to return so whole familymore →

Such a disappointment…..
When in Gibraltar we usually go here for the carvery. Went there today, big mistake. Very disappointed. Asked if I wanted the four meat mix however, got to the carvery and there was no turkey left. The few sprouts remaining, looked very dry and appeared to be welded to the metal dish. Roast potato’s were hard and the entire meal was luke more →

Lovely for breakfast
Went for breakfast…. Walked up and down Main Street on a Sunday morning and all were advertising lunches. Came across the Royal Calpe and the food was lovely. We had American and the Eggs Benedict and we couldn’t fault it. Went back for dinner later in the day with friends and again couldn’t fault it. Stay were polite. Definitely recommenmore →

Pass by this place!
We were in Gibraltar for a quick visit on a Sunday, which meant most places were not open. This place was busy, so we popped in for a late lunch. Really not a good experience! Server was unfriendly, kept looking at her watch as we ordered and as she waited on us - making us feel like we were doing her a favor by being there! Food arrived,more →

Plenty of seating areas (out front, in the conservatory, or in the sheltered beer garden). Choice of beers is a bit weak and was surprisingly quiet (we did visit on a Thursday evening but other places were much more lively). Feels a bit like an abandoned Greene King.more →
