Birds of Prey Migration
One of the great raptor bottlenecks in Europe, twice a year.
The Strait is one of the two main crossing points between Europe and Africa for migrating raptors, and the Rock sits directly under the flight path. In spring and autumn, thousands of honey buzzards, black kites, booted eagles, griffon vultures and short-toed eagles funnel over.
On the right day in September the sky over the Upper Rock is genuinely full of birds. Serious birders plan trips around it; most visitors have no idea it happens.
