In September 1540 a corsair force under Piali Hamet, one of Barbarossa's captains, landed and plundered Gibraltar, carrying off many of its leading citizens. The wall was the answer.

Built from 1540 and strengthened in 1552 under Charles V, it runs from South Bastion at the old waterline all the way up to the ridge of the Rock. Most of it is still standing, and the steep section up the western slope is one of the more striking things to come across on a walk.
