The Mediterranean Steps

The Mediterranean Steps

The hard way up, and the best walk on the Rock by a distance.

4.1 / 5the Nature Reserve pass, from 504 reviewsHow we score

A steep stepped path up the eastern and southern faces from Jews' Gate to O'Hara's Battery at the summit. It is genuinely strenuous, exposed in places, and takes most people an hour and a half to two hours going up.

It is also the single best thing to do in the reserve if you are fit enough. The path threads through cliffs and vegetation almost nobody else sees, and you arrive at the highest point on the Rock having earned it.

Our tip

With the cable car shut until 2027 there is no easy way down, so plan the descent as carefully as the climb. The road down is longer but far kinder on the knees than reversing the steps.

Where this rating comes from

This is the rating for the ticket, not for this site on its own.

4.1out of 5 for the Nature Reserve pass on GetYourGuide, from 504 reviews, shown unchanged

The Mediterranean Steps is not sold or reviewed separately anywhere we can licence, so it carries no score of its own — and we would rather show you nothing than invent one. What we can tell you is how people rate the ticket that admits you to it, which is the thing you actually buy.
